Who We Are
We’re a dynamic, activity-focused nonprofit built on the belief that learning should be joyful, accessible, and inspiring. Our name might be unique, but our purpose is crystal clear: spark excitement for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics in every corner of our community. Throughout Suffolk—including our revitalizing downtown, where we’ve partnered with a local church and the neighborhoods that call it home—we show up with LEGO bricks, robotics kits, bubble science, and boundless enthusiasm.
What Makes Us Different
We don’t just talk about STEAM education—we bring it to life. Whether it’s a massive community festival drawing thousands, a weekly LEGO club in a dance studio, or bubble science in a neighborhood park, we meet people where they are. Our programs are designed to be mobile, adaptable, and always free or low-cost, because we believe financial barriers should never stand between a child and their potential.
Our Heart: The KalamoOVERS
Behind every event, every robot built, and every bubble created is our incredible team of volunteers—our KalamooVERS. These passionate individuals pour their hearts into our mission, with two dedicated team members even serving full-time without compensation. Why? We believe in the strength of collaboration. Kalamoo doesn’t work alone—we actively seek out like-minded organizations to pool resources, share expertise, and multiply our impact. From Suffolk Public Library and local dance academies to parks and recreation departments and health organizations, we’re constantly building bridges. When we work together, we create something far greater than any single organization could accomplish alone.
Our Community Roots
While Kalamoo Community Outreach officially launched in recent years, our commitment to community building goes back to 2010. We’ve been showing up for neighborhood events, church picnics, HOA gatherings, and community celebrations long before we had a formal name. This work isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are.
Our Vision for Suffolk
We dream of a Suffolk where every child, regardless of their zip code or background, can access quality STEAM education. We envision a city recognized as a hub of innovation and creativity, where young people grow up confident in their ability to solve problems, think critically, and build the future they want to see. We’re working to make that vision a reality, one brick, one robot, and one inspired learner at a time.
Why STEAM Matters
STEAM isn’t just about preparing kids for jobs of the future—though it certainly does that. It’s about teaching critical thinking, fostering creativity, encouraging teamwork, and showing young people that they can tackle big challenges. It’s about building confidence and opening doors to possibilities they might never have imagined. When a child successfully codes their first robot or engineers a bubble wand that creates the perfect bubble, they learn something powerful: “I can do hard things.”
How We Sustain Our Mission
As a nonprofit, every dollar matters. The rising cost of materials and the growing demand for our services means we rely heavily on donations, sponsorships, and grants to continue our work. Our KalamooVERS donate countless hours, but financial support helps us purchase LEGO sets, robotics equipment, event supplies, and all the materials that make learning hands-on and exciting. When you support Kalamoo, you’re investing directly in Suffolk’s children and in our community’s future.

Volunteer: Become a KalamooVER! We need mentors for our robotics teams, helpers at events, and people who simply want to share their passion for learning with others. No technical experience required—just bring your enthusiasm.
